Article Roundup, July 10-18: Porn, summer, toxins, transgender rights and dry skin

dogsIt’s been a weird week. I spent the weekend helping my friend clean her house to procrastinate cleaning my own house. We got tacos but outside of that didn’t do anything particularly interesting. I blame the bad weather. I spray painted an alligator hot pink and a square frame green and framed one of my Instagram prints. I tested the dogs’ lifejackets so I can take them out on the water without worrying that they’ll sink.

I’ve been having some lower right abdominal pain which knew probably meant that the effing cyst is back and it looks like I’m right, except I won’t know for sure until the radiologist talks to my doctor and she talks to me. This time I saw my general practitioner first because my gyno was all booked up and boy let me tell you how much I absolutely hate dealing with medical stuff and the general tomfoolery of the health care industry. Good news? I met my yearly deductible in one day. So I’m in a shit mood about all that and I’m in pain and it’s in general making me a fairly cranky lady. Also the cyst is making me feel bloated and nauseated which means I can’t even eat my feelings properly. What the hell.

ANYWAY.

Some of my recent Internet stuff

Mom story: My son is transgender. If you’re going to read one single thing I’ve written, please read this. Most of the words are Mary Moss’s and she is amazing. Even if you don’t read this, please take time to learn more about what it means to be transgender, what it means to be the parent of a transgender child and very importantly, what a transgender child deals with at home and at school.

Baby names from Comic-Con. I don’t really want to talk about SDCC because I’m not there stalking all of my crushes right now.

How to deal with dryness during pregnancy. I was brutally dry during pregnancy, from my eyes to my hands. We’re talking bleeding fingers. Some expert types and lovely blogger friends chimed in to help you deal with this highly annoying pregancy symptom.

How do you feel about porn? I wish more women would chime in on this one. The topic really fascinates me. My feelings on porn are constantly evolving.

Why you should ditch the air freshener. I could talk about this all day. Air freshener makes me completely crazy. I hate the way its marketed and that women in particularly are sent messages that their homes may not be clean or inviting unless odors are masked with chemicals. It kind of mirrors the Summer’s Eve marketing bullshit and I’m just over it all.

  1. If you ever feel like having a chat about porn, I’m available. I’ve been working as a porn mag editor for the past 9 months. It’s not exactly my idea of incredible work or anything to be honest. I needed a job at the time and a friend told me about the opening so I took it. At first it was interesting, but it’s kind of desensitized me to a lot of it. I feel like we’re on the less extreme end of the hardcore pornography industry, though. Certainly not as misogynist/near abusive seeming as some stuff I’ve seen out there (we have a lot of regulations we have to follow so I’ve always felt it’s just slightly more woman friendly). Also, we’re in the non-stream niche biz (our company has a teen mag, 2 amateur mags, 3 mags for women over 40, an XL girl mag, a mag for leg/foot fetishists, and a few others), so it’s a bit different than some of the standard porn you find. Unfortunately unlike mags like Playboy, there aren’t really any articles written that could be shared in mixed company so to speak. It’s all very smutty.
